A PERSONAL PROFILE
Vijai P. Sharma, Ph.D., received post-graduate training in medical and social psychology training at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences from Bangalore, India, Advance Training in Clinical Psychology at the Tavistock Clinic, London, U.K., and has a doctoral degree from Lund University, Lund, Sweden. He is currently a licensed health service provider psychologist in Tennessee, U.S.A., since 1981. He has 30+ years of professional experience in helping children, teenagers and adults providing child therapy, personal counseling, marriage and family counseling and psychological support for mind-body training, coping with life-threatening illnesses and chronic pain control.
Dr. Sharma feels that his 30+ years of experience of working with children, teenagers and adults with their families, all in the span of the same day, has enabled him to see the full spectrum of life in its continuity, from infancy to maturity. This has enabled him to get insights into the perspectives of children, parents, spouses, grandparents, bosses and employees. A majority of professionals accumulate experience in one or two phases of the life cycle. Having trained and worked in the several cultures of the East and West has offers him a unique opportunity to contrast and compare people's experiences, values and believes and view them independently without being obfuscated by one set of perspective, values and beliefs.
An avid student of Yoga all his life, trained in the western professional psychology, he has kept up with the regular practice of meditation since the 1970s. In the last few years, while meeting the challenges of two medical conditions, he had an opportunity to put into practice him mind-body training, meditation and mindfulness. So, he can speak from personal experience and practices what he preaches. This is helpful for clients who grapple with medical conditions.
